NEW BOOK

In order to raise much-needed funds for our Joydance Project to help orphans in Russia, we have produced a new book:

'Healing from Within - Dance and Movement to Music for Children.'

This includes ideas and techniques contributed by our Diploma holders and advanced students in Moscow, the U.K. and Dubai. It also offers a quick guide to using dance and movement to music as a form of 'community dance therapy.'

Price (including P&P and a donation) £15.

Please send your order with a cheque to our Torquay address, made payable to The Association of Dance Therapists.

Russia

We are extremely proud of our Moscow on-line study group who have been working for a Diploma enabling them to work with children in care. They will be offering 40-minute sessions of dance and movement to music, as well as other artistic opportunities. Currently the group are preparing to carry out 12 hours' practical work supervised by psychologists and child psychiatrists attached to participating children's homes. Congratulations to all concerned: we are looking forward to recruiting a further 12 students from the Moscow area in the near future.

Adrian's Progress

Adrian Atkins is someone for whom we all have the highest regard. After achieving his Intermediate Level Diploma with us, he set up his own Dance Therapy Centre in Wiltshire, working in close co-operation with Wiltshire County Council to work with large groups of young people, as well as some elderly groups, especially during the summer. More recently Adrian has been working very closely with the Education Services – he has a degree in Education – and along with introducing a number of innovative ideas which are being taken up by other Educational Authorities in Britain, he has also been offering treatment, under supervision, to 'looked after children' some of whom have suffered severe trauma. It is so encouraging to see how Adrian's talent is appreciated and how he never ceases to make progress. We hope he will be giving workshops for us once again during the summer.

Sophira Shannon

Sophira is another exceptional Diploma student who runs her own Academy in Wales, specialising in particular in 'belly dancing' for women's groups. She has built up an impressive record and earned the admiration of the Social Services in her area who refer clients to her. Belly dancing has long been approved by the NHS as a way of treating certain psychological and emotional illnesses. A number of nurses whom we have known down the years have also specialised in this art form and used it within their work. Congratulations Sophira for your greatly appreciated healing work, and we hope you will soon be trying – like Adrian – for your Intermediate Level Diploma.

Our thanks to all the above for their dedication, loyalty and outstanding talent.
