ON-LINE LEARNING
Working at Home
Like Distance-learning, On-line learning means that you can work at home, in your own time and at your own pace, without the inconvenience and expense of travelling to a designated location for your training.
Once we receive your Enrolment Form for your chosen programme, we send you a set of Course Notes through the post. This contains most of the information you will need to complete the written assignments, for it is our policy not to try to impose too many ideas from other sources, but rather to encourage you to discover for yourself the often hidden talent that is waiting to be developed. In other words, based on the Course Material and your own creative ideas, you have a sufficient foundation on which to build in order to start working with dance and movement as therapy under supervision.
At the end of each Unit of the Course Notes you will find a two-part question on which your written assignments will be based. The first part of each question is usually a general one, to establish that you have understood the Course Material for that Unit. The second part affords an opportunity to design your own short programme suitable for a given situation.
We like you to send in your work, either by e-mail (or, if you prefer, through the post) so that within the next two or three days we can send you our comments and evaluation, together with any special guidance your Tutors decide is appropriate.
The usual time for completing work for each Unit is 2 weeks. If more time is needed, this is perfectly acceptable as long as you let us know in good time.
When you have completed all the Units
At the end of 5, 6 or 10 Units (according to which programme you choose) you will be invited to take the Diploma Examination in London. This consists of a 40-minute one-to-one interview with our Examiner, who will look at examples of what you and your Tutors consider to be your best work for the On-line part of your training. You should also bring to the Examination tapes or CDs of your chosen music. The Examiner will question you about your method, and provided her assessment, together with your high quality written work, is up to the required standard, a Basic or Intermediate Level Diploma will be awarded. The Diploma makes clear that in the opinion of the School of Dance Therapy the successful candidate is ready to work with dance and movement as therapy, under professional supervision.
While the School cannot undertake to offer placements for successful candidates we will do everything in our power to support applications you may make on your own behalf.
The work of our best Diploma holders is so highly regarded by a group of London psychiatrists that it has been recognised as 'a valuable contribution to medical research.'
Supporting Workshops
For the Basic Level Diploma attending workshops is not considered essential. There is an on-going self-development and creativity training programme available in London for Intermediate Level Diploma candidates. We recommend that Basic Level Diploma candidates enrol for a good-quality weekly dance class locally, while studying with us, if at all possible. Your Tutor will advise.
